Krittika nakshatra
Krittika is named for a cluster of stars seen as one: the cluster classical writers count as six of the Pleiades, taken as the mothers who raised Kartikeya, the war-god's son. It opens in the last stretch of Mesha and closes ten degrees into Vrishabha. Surya rules it, and its deity is Agni, fire in its cleansing form.

Six stars, one nakshatra
Varahamihira's Brihat Samhita describes Krittika as six of the seven visible stars of the cluster, leaving one aside. The story that grew around this is of Skanda, later called Kartikeya, a child of such hunger that six foster mothers were needed to nurse him, each lending a face to the six-headed god he became. Krittika keeps something of that image: an appetite for more than one thing at a time, a closeness to fire, both the kind that cooks and the kind that clears ground.
The symbol is a blade, sometimes read as a flame. Both point the same way, toward cutting cleanly rather than wearing something down slowly. Agni as deity adds the idea of purification: burning off what is not needed so what remains is usable. The Hindu calendar keeps the link alive. The month of Karthika takes its name from this star, the full moon of that month falling near it.
Surya's star, and where the Moon is strongest
Surya rules Krittika, which gives the star its taste for being seen and for work done in the open rather than quietly. A second detail belongs here too: the exact degree of the Moon's exaltation, three degrees of Vrishabha, falls inside Krittika's second pada, not in Rohini which begins seven degrees later. A Moon placed there is unusually strong, its natural qualities of feeling and memory raised to their fullest expression, even though the star it sits in belongs to Surya, not to Chandra.
Krittika as your janma nakshatra
When the Moon stood in Krittika at birth, the mind it gives is sharp and quick to judge, with little patience for what is unclear or half done. There is real appetite here, for food, for recognition, for the next task, and a directness that others tend to notice first. Gana Rakshasa marks the star's edge: strong will, strong likes and dislikes, a wish to finish decisively rather than let a matter drift.
The strength is the same edge, used well: the ability to cut through confusion and say plainly what a situation needs. The lesson is timing that blade with care, since Krittika can wound where it only meant to clarify. Work suited to the star tends to reward precision and a willingness to lead from the front: the culinary trades, editing, metalwork, exacting close work of any kind, any field where cutting away the excess is the whole craft.
Because Surya rules the star, your life opens in a Surya dasha, six years in full. How much of it remains at birth depends on how far the Moon had travelled through Krittika. From there the sequence runs in its fixed order: Chandra, Kuja, Rahu and onward.
Care, for this star, means cooling down before the temper decides for you. A short pause before speaking tends to serve Krittika better than most advice about patience in general.
Krittika rising
With the lagna in Krittika, the rising point falls either in the last degrees of Mesha or the first ten of Vrishabha, and the chart should be read for which. The manner is direct, warm in company and quick to take a stand. The body carries a certain brightness, an ease at being noticed. Whichever rashi holds the lagna, its lord repays a close look alongside Surya: one gives the outer bearing, the other the appetite behind it.
The four padas and their navamshas
| Pada | Span | Navamsha | Syllable |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 26°40′ to 30°00′ Mesha | Dhanus | A |
| 2 | 0°00′ to 3°20′ Vrishabha | Makara | I |
| 3 | 3°20′ to 6°40′ Vrishabha | Kumbha | U |
| 4 | 6°40′ to 10°00′ Vrishabha | Meena | E |
- Pada 1, Dhanus navamsha. The first pada falls in the Dhanus navamsha, ruled by Guru, and closes out Mesha with a philosophical, restless energy.
- Pada 2, Makara navamsha. The second pada opens Vrishabha in the Makara navamsha, ruled by Shani: steadier, more patient, carrying the Moon's exaltation point within it.
- Pada 3, Kumbha navamsha. The third pada falls in Kumbha, also ruled by Shani, inclined toward ideas that serve a wider circle than the self alone.
- Pada 4, Meena navamsha. The fourth pada falls in Meena, ruled by Guru, softening the star's edge with imagination and a wish to help.
Names from Krittika
The naming syllables for Krittika are A, I, U and E, one for each pada in order. Families who follow the tradition take the syllable from the pada the Moon occupied at birth, since it shifts with the degree.
Work and calling
Varahamihira's Brihat Samhita sets those who keep the sacred fire, priests, potters and barbers under Krittika, a list that follows from Agni as its deity. In present terms the star suits temple service, ceramics, work with kilns or furnaces, or the grooming trades. Surya (the Sun) as lord adds a taste for authority held in the open, which fits public administration, defence or any post where decisions are signed in one's name.
Marriage and partners
The six mothers who raised Kartikeya give Krittika a protective, providing side in family life. The native tends to be honest with a partner, sometimes sharply so, with steady loyalty once settled. Surya as lord gives self-respect, so a marriage built on mutual regard suits it best. Hot words are the point that asks for care; a partner who lets a quarrel cool before it is settled helps the star a great deal.
In matching, the sheep yoni of Krittika scores no yoni points with the monkey yoni of Purva Ashadha or Shravana. Because the star spans two signs, the bhakoot and graha maitri kutas depend on whether each Moon falls in Mesha or Vrishabha. Low points in any kuta are examined in the whole chart.
Health, in general terms
Krittika spans the end of Mesha with the start of Vrishabha, signs the Kalapurusha gives to the head and the face. Those are the areas that ask for care. A fire star does well with cooling habits: enough water, meals at regular hours, a pause before heated talk.
Other names and spellings
In Tamil the star is Karthigai, falling in Mesham and Rishabam rasi. Telugu writes Krittika or Kruthika. Kritika is a common spelling, while Malayalam and Kannada use Karthika. The Tamil month of Karthigai takes its name from the star, as does Karthigai Deepam, the festival of lamps held when the Moon is here in that month.
Questions people ask
What is Krittika nakshatra in English?
Krittika has no single English name; it is identified with the star cluster known in the West as the Pleiades, or the Seven Sisters, though the nakshatra itself is reckoned from six of those stars.
Is Krittika a good nakshatra?
Muhurta texts place it among the Mishra, or mixed, nakshatras, workable for both ordinary tasks and sharper ones, though not the first choice for the gentlest beginnings. As a birth star it gives clarity, appetite and the courage to act decisively. Whether that serves a particular life well is a question for the whole chart, not the star alone.
Which nakshatras are compatible with Krittika?
In kundali matching, Krittika scores the full yoni points with Pushya, the other sheep star. It shares full gana points with the other Rakshasa-gana stars, among them Ashlesha, Magha, Chitra and Vishakha. A partner born in the same Antya-nadi group scores no points in the nadi kuta, which the texts weigh most heavily, so that pairing is worth a closer look at the whole chart. How matching works.
What is the lord of Krittika nakshatra?
Surya rules Krittika, so a birth with the Moon here opens in a Surya dasha. The star sits across two rashis, Mesha ruled by Kuja and Vrishabha ruled by Shukra; whichever holds the Moon's exact degree matters for the chart.
What is Krittika nakshatra called in Tamil and Telugu?
Tamil calls it Karthigai. Telugu writes Krittika or Kruthika, while Malayalam and Kannada use Karthika.
Also in Mesha and Vrishabha: Ashwini, Bharani, Rohini, Mrigashira. All twenty-seven nakshatras.
