Rohini nakshatra

Rohini sits at the heart of Vrishabha, from ten degrees to twenty-three degrees twenty minutes. Chandra rules it, and tradition calls it the Moon's favourite among the twenty-seven, the star he is said to linger over longest. Its symbol is a cart or chariot, the image of something slowly, steadily brought to fullness.

The Moon's favourite

The old story tells of Chandra married to all twenty-seven nakshatras, daughters of the sage Daksha, giving his time unevenly. Rohini he preferred openly, spending far more of his light there than on the rest. The other wives took the matter to their father, and Daksha's displeasure fell on Chandra as a wasting away. What is remembered today as the Moon's waxing and waning began, in the story, with this favouritism. Even after the sentence was softened, the pattern held. It is why the Moon still moves through every star in turn, and why Rohini is still spoken of as the one he returns to most gladly.

Prajapati's cart

The deity is Prajapati, sometimes named as Brahma, the shaper of what comes into being. The cart he is pictured driving carries the produce of the earth, an image drawn straight from Vrishabha itself, the sign of what has been tended and is now ready. Rohini is a Dhruva, or fixed, nakshatra, the class the muhurta texts favour for laying a foundation, starting a planting, or beginning anything meant to hold its shape for years rather than days.

Rohini as your janma nakshatra

When the Moon stood in Rohini at birth, the mind it shapes is patient and drawn to what is pleasing to the senses: good food, a well-made object, a voice worth listening to. There is little hurry in it. Rohini grows things the way a season does, at a pace that resists being rushed by anyone.

The strength here is steadiness that others can build on. A Rohini native tends to be the one a family or a team leans on for continuity, the person whose word, once given, does not shift. The lesson is that growth still needs a season to finish; the harvest cannot be forced early. Work that suits the star tends to involve cultivation in the widest sense: agriculture, food, finance, the arts, or any craft where care compounds over time into something fine.

Because Chandra rules the star, your life opens in a Chandra dasha, ten years in full. How much of it remains at birth depends on how far the Moon had travelled through Rohini. From there the Vimshottari order continues with Kuja, Rahu, Guru and onward.

Comfort matters more to this star's care than most. Regular meals, a settled place to sleep and time spent around what is beautiful do more for Rohini than any effort of willpower.

Rohini rising

With the lagna in Rohini, the rising degree falls in the middle third of Vrishabha. Shukra rules the ascending sign, Chandra rules the rising star, a doubling that tends to show in an appearance many call attractive and a manner that puts others at ease quickly. The body favours comfort and shows its feelings through the face more than the words. Both lords are worth tracing through the chart to see where that ease is spent.

  • Pada 1, Mesha navamsha. The first pada falls in the Mesha navamsha, ruled by Kuja, giving the steadiest of the four quarters an early burst of drive.
  • Pada 2, Vrishabha navamsha. The second pada falls in Vrishabha, ruled by Shukra, doubling the sign's pull toward beauty and lasting comfort.
  • Pada 3, Mithuna navamsha. The third pada falls in Mithuna, ruled by Budha, adding curiosity and a readier tongue to the star's usual patience.
  • Pada 4, Karkataka navamsha. The fourth pada falls in Karkataka, ruled by Chandra as well, the most feeling and most attached of the four.

Names from Rohini

The naming syllables for Rohini are O, Va, Vi and Vu, taken from the pada the Moon occupied at birth. The syllable changes every 3°20′, which is why the exact pada in the chart decides it.

Work and calling

Varahamihira's Brihat Samhita sets merchants, cart drivers, keepers of cattle and those who till the soil under Rohini. The list follows from its cart symbol, with Vrishabha's bull behind it. In present terms that points to dairy, transport and logistics, retail, or the trade in produce. Chandra (the Moon) as lord adds a feel for what people want, useful in hospitality, design or fashion. With Prajapati, the shaper, as deity, work that builds something to last also fits, such as construction or furniture-making.

Marriage and partners

Rohini brings affection, steadiness and a love of a comfortable home to married life. The story of Chandra's favour is often read as a note on attachment: the star loves deeply, so possessiveness is the point that asks for care. A partner who values routine, good food with a settled home suits it well. Once committed, Rohini tends to stay, giving the marriage the same patient care it gives to anything it grows.

In matching, the serpent yoni of Rohini scores no yoni points with the mongoose yoni of Uttara Ashadha. That same star shares Rohini's Manushya gana, a good example of why each kuta is weighed against the others. Bhakoot with graha maitri depends on the two Moon signs, so a Vrishabha Moon is also compared sign to sign. Low points are examined in the whole chart.

Health, in general terms

Rohini lies wholly in Vrishabha, the sign the Kalapurusha gives to the face. The face is the area that asks for care. A star fond of good food is helped by moderate portions at regular hours, with a daily walk to balance the comfort Rohini enjoys.

Other names and spellings

Rohini keeps the same name in Tamil and Telugu. Tamil almanacs list it under Rishabam rasi, where the whole star falls. The spelling rarely varies. Krishna's birth is traditionally placed in Rohini nakshatra, which is why the name is heard so often around Janmashtami.

Questions

Questions people ask

Why is Rohini called the Moon's favourite?

The tradition holds that Chandra, married to all the nakshatras, gave Rohini more of his light than the rest. The waxing and waning of the Moon is said to have begun as the consequence of that favour. Chandra rules two other stars, Hasta and Shravana, yet Rohini is the one the stories keep.

Is Rohini a good nakshatra?

Muhurta texts count it among the Dhruva, or fixed, nakshatras, well suited to foundations, plantings and anything meant to last. As a birth star it gives patience, a feel for beauty and steady growth. What a particular life makes of that is read from the whole chart, not the star alone.

Which nakshatras are compatible with Rohini?

In kundali matching, Rohini scores the full yoni points with Mrigashira, the other serpent star. It shares full gana points with the other Manushya-gana stars, among them Bharani, Ardra and Purva Phalguni. A partner born in the same Antya-nadi group scores no points in the nadi kuta, which the texts weigh most, so that pairing is worth a closer look at the whole chart. How matching works.

What is the lord of Rohini nakshatra?

Chandra rules Rohini, so a birth with the Moon here opens life in a Chandra dasha. The rashi, Vrishabha, is ruled by Shukra; the two together are why Rohini carries such a strong pull toward comfort and beauty.

What is Rohini nakshatra called in Tamil and Telugu?

Both use the same name, Rohini. In Tamil it is a star of Rishabam rasi.

Also in Vrishabha: Krittika, Mrigashira. All twenty-seven nakshatras.
