The nine stones
Each graha has its stone, its metal and its finger. Worn well, a ratna strengthens what its graha already governs in your chart.
Why the chart chooses the stone
A stone amplifies its graha, and that is a gift only when the graha already works for the ascendant. The rule is specific. A graha ruling a kendra together with a trikona, the strongest combination in a chart, is prescribed its stone freely. A graha ruling a trikona alone is a plain benefic and prescribed too. A graha ruling the sixth, eighth or twelfth house is read as working against that particular lagna, and its stone is set aside rather than worn. The same graha can be a friend for one ascendant and a difficulty for another, which is why a ratna recommendation reads the whole chart before it names a stone.
Blue sapphire, and why it is tested
Blue sapphire is the one to be careful with. The tradition tests it before it is kept. Nila, Shani's stone, is held to act faster and more strongly than the rest, for good or for difficulty. Custom asks that it is worn a few days before the wearer commits to it: on the skin, watched for how those days feel, kept if they settle, set aside if they do not.
Weight, setting and skin contact
Weight and setting matter. So does skin contact. Classical guidance favours a stone of real weight over a small one, set so it touches the skin directly rather than sitting behind a closed backing. It goes on the metal and finger the table below names, first worn on an auspicious day.
The upratna, a lighter substitute
Where a primary stone is costly or hard to source, the remedy texts allow an upratna, one of the semi-precious stones they list beside the nine ratnas, a related and more affordable mineral said to carry a milder form of the same graha's quality. An upratna is held gentler than the primary stone, and it still asks the same condition: worn only where the chart supports strengthening that graha at all.

Before you buy one
- Strengthen a friend, never an enemy. A stone lifts its graha, which is a gift when that graha helps your lagna, and a burden when it does not.
- Blue sapphire is the one to be careful with. The tradition tests it before it is kept.
- Weight and setting matter, and so does skin contact.
Questions people ask
How is my gemstone chosen?
From the ascendant, not from the birth star alone. A graha's stone is prescribed only where that graha already works for the lagna, ruling a trikona, or a kendra and a trikona together, since a stone strengthens whatever its graha already stands for in a chart, favourable or not.
Can I wear any stone I like?
A stone strengthens its graha regardless of whether that graha helps the ascendant, so wearing one at random can lift a placement that would rather stay quiet. The tradition tests a stone, blue sapphire above all, before it commits to keeping it.
What is an upratna?
A lighter substitute for a primary stone, usually a related and more affordable mineral standing in for the same graha in a milder form. It is worn under the same condition as the primary stone: only where the chart supports strengthening that graha at all.
Do gemstones affect health?
A stone is a classical remedy for a graha's placement in a chart. Questions about the body belong with a doctor, and a ratna reading does not stand in for one.
