What a jatakam is

The word comes from jataka, meaning "of one who is born". A jatakam records the planets as they stood at the hour of your birth and what that arrangement says about you. Many families once kept it on palm leaf, and brought it out at the naming, at the start of schooling and at the time of marriage.

Today the same record is prepared on screen, and it opens on any phone or computer.

How it is worked out

Your date of birth places the planets. Your time of birth fixes the rising sign, and four minutes can move it. Your place of birth gives the longitude and the timezone. From these the chart is cast with exact planetary positions and read with the classical texts of Parashara, Varahamihira and Mantreswara.
