Dhanus rashi

Dhanus, the archer, is the ninth rashi, spanning 240° to 270° of the sidereal zodiac. It is Agni rashi, of the fire element, and Dvisvabhava, dual: fire that has learned to aim rather than simply burn. Guru (Jupiter) rules it, the graha of meaning, teaching and the long view.

Fire with a target

The three fire signs each carry drive differently. Mesha drives to start, Simha drives to be seen. Dhanus drives toward something specific: a belief, a destination, a qualification, a cause. Fire that has no aim frets; fire in Dhanus finds an aim and then travels a long way to reach it.

Guru's rulership gives the sign its reach. No graha finds exaltation or debilitation in Dhanus, a distinction it shares with only one other sign in the zodiac. Classical writers read a sign with no extremes as one that offers a steady field rather than a dramatic one. Whatever a graha placed here brings, it brings without the amplifying pull of exaltation or the drag of debility. Dhanus is the sign Guru rules, close to home, where it works at its natural, unforced strength.

Dhanus as the Moon sign

When the Moon stood in Dhanus at birth, this is the janma rashi. Saravali's chapter on the Moon in each sign, read past its harsher predictions of fortune and rank, describes a mind generous with what it knows, at ease with people from very different backgrounds. It is drawn toward whatever widens its view: study, travel, a system of belief examined rather than simply inherited.

The strength this sign gives is genuine reach. Dhanus Moon natives tend to teach well, whether or not teaching is the job, and to keep faith with a long project after the early excitement has worn off. Many are pulled toward law, philosophy, travel or any field built on interpreting a larger structure of rules or ideas for someone else.

The lesson is precision in the small. An arrow that has its aim right still needs its fletching straight, and a Dhanus Moon can lose a good aim to carelessness in the near details. Rest, for this Moon sign, is less about slowing the mind than about giving it somewhere far enough away to send its attention.

Dhanus rising

With the lagna in Dhanus, Guru rules the ascendant. The person it describes tends to arrive with warmth and a certain largeness, physical or otherwise. The older texts note a frank, outspoken manner alongside it. Saravali's chapter on ascendants gives the Dhanus lagna a strong frame and a face that reads as open before a word is spoken.

Because Guru finds neither exaltation nor debility in the sign it rules, this lagna reads mostly through where Guru itself sits elsewhere in the chart, through whichever graha shares the ascendant or aspects it. A Dhanus lagna tends to be the one in the group who has actually read the guidebook, wanting the trip to mean something more than the postcard.

Its nakshatras

The three nakshatras of Dhanus

Dhanus holds the whole of Mula, the whole of Purva Ashadha and the first pada of Uttara Ashadha. Mula opens the sign with its work of clearing to the root, the willingness to let an old structure go before building the next one. Purva Ashadha follows with an early, confident victory, undefeated and unhurried. Uttara Ashadha's first pada begins the turn toward a win meant to last rather than one meant to impress.

The seam between Jyeshtha, the closing star of Vrischika, and Mula, opening this sign, is one of the three gandanta points in the zodiac, where a water sign meets a fire sign. A birth in the opening minutes of Dhanus falls near this junction, and tradition asks for a shanti there.

Across the chart: the third sign

Dhanus's opposite number, the seventh sign from it, is Mithuna. Mithuna gathers many small facts and holds them lightly. Dhanus gathers one large idea and holds it firmly. A chart weighted in both signs often carries the tension between curiosity that samples widely and conviction that commits.

Kalapurusha, the zodiac as a body, gives this sign the thighs, the part that carries the stride. Read as care, that points to a native who does well by walking, by movement over long distances rather than short, sharp effort.

Questions

Questions people ask

Is Dhanus the same as Sagittarius?

They name the same stars, measured two different ways. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, anchored to the stars; Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, anchored to the seasons. The two are now about 24 degrees apart, so a person's Dhanus rashi is usually one sign earlier than their Western Sun sign.

Why is Dhanus considered a strong or balanced sign?

No graha is exalted or debilitated here, one of only two such signs in the zodiac. Texts read this as a field without extremes, where a placed graha shows its ordinary nature rather than a heightened or weakened one. Dhanus is also the sign Guru rules, which strengthens Guru here in most readings.

Which rashis are compatible with Dhanus?

Matching weighs the two Moon signs: bhakoot for the distance between the rashis, graha maitri for the friendship between their lords, here Guru. A weak result in either koota is one factor among eight, read against the whole chart rather than treated as a verdict. How matching works.

Which nakshatras fall in Dhanus rashi?

The whole of Mula, the whole of Purva Ashadha and the first pada of Uttara Ashadha. The Moon's precise nakshatra at birth, not the rashi alone, decides the janma nakshatra and the dasha it opens.
