Mula nakshatra
Mula opens Dhanus at 0°00′ and runs to 13°20′. Its name means "root," its symbol a bundle of roots pulled from the ground, and its deity is Nirriti, who clears away what a new cycle cannot carry forward.

The root of the matter
Mula sits at the point where the zodiac turns from water back to fire, since Vrischika, a water sign, ends just before it and Dhanus, a fire sign, begins here. A root nakshatra fittingly opens a fire sign: Mula reaches down before Dhanus reaches up. The symbol, a clump of roots torn loose, is read in the old texts as getting to the base of things, past whatever surface has grown over them.
Nirriti governs this clearing. She is not disorder for disorder's sake; she is the deity of what a household or a cycle sets aside once it has served its purpose, so the next season can begin without the old weight. Read this way, Mula's association with endings is closer to composting than to loss: something is taken apart so that its parts can be used again.
Ketu rules the star, doubling the theme. Ketu detaches, questions and strips away decoration to find what is actually true underneath. A Mula native tends to ask "why" past the point where most people stop asking, and rarely accepts an answer just because it is the accepted one.
As the birth star
When the Moon was in Mula at birth, this is the janma nakshatra. The mind it shapes is investigative: drawn to causes rather than appearances, comfortable pulling something apart to understand how it was built, whether the something is an idea, an institution or a family pattern. Research, philosophy, herbal or root medicine, and any work that gets underneath a surface problem all suit this star well.
The gana is Rakshasa, the same group given to Jyeshtha, read generously as directness and a will strong enough to keep asking uncomfortable questions after others have moved on.
The life opens in a Ketu dasha, seven years in full, shorter than every period in the Vimshottari sequence but Surya's six; how much of it remains at birth follows from how far the Moon had crossed the star. Because the dasha is short, a Mula native often meets its questioning energy early, then spends the rest of Vimshottari's longer periods building on what that early searching turned up. Care here means giving the mind somewhere to land once it has finished taking something apart, rather than leaving every question open at once.
Mula rising
With the lagna in Mula, the rising degree falls in the first third of Dhanus. The manner tends to be blunt and searching, at ease naming what others leave unsaid. The muhurta class of the star is Tikshna, sharp, and that sharpness often shows first in how directly this lagna speaks.
Guru rules Dhanus and so the lagna, while Ketu rules the rising star. Both are worth locating in the chart: Guru shows where the native builds meaning, Ketu shows where the native strips meaning down to test it.
The four padas and their navamshas
| Pada | Span | Navamsha | Syllable |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0°00′ to 3°20′ Dhanus | Mesha | Ye |
| 2 | 3°20′ to 6°40′ Dhanus | Vrishabha | Yo |
| 3 | 6°40′ to 10°00′ Dhanus | Mithuna | Bha |
| 4 | 10°00′ to 13°20′ Dhanus | Karkataka | Bhi |
- Pada 1, Mesha navamsha. The first pada falls in the Mesha navamsha, ruled by Kuja, the boldest quarter, quick to act on whatever the roots have turned up.
- Pada 2, Vrishabha navamsha. The second pada falls in Vrishabha, ruled by Shukra, steadier and more patient, willing to sit with a difficult finding before acting on it.
- Pada 3, Mithuna navamsha. The third pada falls in Mithuna, ruled by Budha, drawn to explain and discuss what the digging has uncovered.
- Pada 4, Karkataka navamsha. The fourth pada falls in Karkataka, ruled by Chandra, bringing the star's searching instinct home, to family and to feeling.
The Jyeshtha–Mula gandanta
The opening minutes of Mula continue the junction that begins in the last minutes of Jyeshtha before it, one of the three gandanta points where a water sign meets a fire sign, alongside Ashlesha–Magha and Revati–Ashwini. Classical muhurta writers built a remedy for exactly this stretch: a shanti performed with a priest, sometimes timed around the twenty-seventh day after birth. It is a settling ceremony, not a warning, and it is offered plainly, the way any threshold in the calendar gets marked.
Names from Mula
The four padas carry the syllables Ye, Yo, Bha and Bhi. A family keeping the naming custom takes the syllable from the exact pada, since it changes every 3°20′ within the star.
Work and calling
Mula's work follows its root. Nirriti clears away what has served its purpose, and Ketu (the Moon's south node) looks past the surface for the cause underneath. Varahamihira's list in the Brihat Samhita links Mula with medicines, physicians, seeds, roots and fruits. Fitting kinds of work include research of any sort, Ayurveda or pharmacy, botany or farming close to the soil, audit or investigative journalism, and the study of philosophy. Each rewards a patient search for first causes over quick answers.
Marriage and partners
Mula natives bring honesty to married life. They say what they think, they look for the cause of a quarrel instead of covering it over, and they value a partner who can hear a plain truth without taking offence. A spouse who shares a serious interest, a study or a cause, tends to keep this star's respect for a long time. Ketu's detachment asks for warmth to be shown openly, since the feeling underneath is often stronger than it appears.
In matching, the yoni kuta gives a low score with the deer-yoni stars, Anuradha and Jyeshtha. Bhakoot and graha maitri come from the two Moon signs, so a Mula partner is read through Dhanus as well as through the star. Low points in any kuta are examined in the whole chart. See Marriage prediction for Dhanus and how marriage is read from the Moon sign.
Health, in general terms
Mula falls wholly in Dhanus, which Varahamihira's Kalapurusha assigns to the thighs, so the thighs are the area that asks for care. A mind that keeps digging also needs a set hour to stop. Regular walking, steady meals and sleep at a fixed time suit this star well.
Other names and spellings
Mula is Moolam in Tamil and in Malayalam, Moola in Telugu. Hindi calendars often write it Mool. In Tamil reckoning the star lies entirely in Dhanusu rasi, the first nakshatra of that sign.
Questions people ask
Is Mula a good nakshatra?
Yes, taken for the strengths it gives: a searching, honest mind, and the courage to look underneath a comfortable surface. Muhurta texts count it among the Tikshna, sharp, nakshatras, suited to decisive work rather than gentle beginnings. What a chart does with that searching instinct is read from the lagna and dashas together.
What is the deity and lord of Mula nakshatra?
Nirriti, who governs clearing and dissolution, presides over Mula. Ketu rules the star and opens the life in a Ketu dasha. The rashi, Dhanus, is ruled by Guru.
Is Mula a gandanta nakshatra?
Its opening degrees are. The Jyeshtha–Mula junction is one of the three gandanta points of the zodiac, where a water sign meets a fire sign. The tradition marks it with a shanti.
Which nakshatras are compatible with Mula?
In kundali matching, Mula shares its yoni, the dog, with Ardra, scoring the full four yoni points. Its gana, Rakshasa, matches Krittika, Ashlesha, Magha, Chitra, Vishakha, Jyeshtha, Dhanishtha and Shatabhisha. Nadi, weighed most heavily, scores zero when both partners share Mula's Adya nadi, though relief is recorded for specific pairs in the texts. A low score in one koota is examined against the whole chart. How matching works.
What is Mula nakshatra called in Tamil and Telugu?
Tamil calendars call it Moolam, Telugu calendars Moola. It lies in Dhanus, written Dhanusu rasi in Tamil.
Also in Dhanus: Purva Ashadha, Uttara Ashadha. All twenty-seven nakshatras.
