Chitra nakshatra

Chitra sits between 23°20′ Kanya and 6°40′ Tula, the fourteenth of the twenty-seven nakshatras. Its deity is Tvashtar, the divine craftsman who shapes and finishes what other gods only design. The symbol is a pearl, built in patient layers until it catches the light. Kuja rules the star, giving Chitra its pull toward things made well.

Tvashtar, the divine craftsman

Tvashtar is the architect among the gods, credited with shaping the forms and instruments the others use. Later texts call him Vishvakarma, maker of the world's forms. He is not the source of an idea but the hand that gives it a finished edge, a measure, a shine.

Chitra's symbol carries the same thread forward: a pearl, formed inside a shell over slow years rather than cut in a single stroke. It stands for polish that takes time and for beauty that is made, not just found.

Kuja rules the star, an unusual pairing: the graha of force ruling a nakshatra built for fine work. The result reads as craft with strength behind it. Chitra's gana is Rakshasa, its yoni the tiger, and its muhurta class is Mridu, the soft group, suited to gentle beginnings.

Two rashis, one star

Most nakshatras sit inside a single rashi. Chitra does not. Its first two padas fall in the closing degrees of Kanya, ruled by Budha, and its last two cross into the opening degrees of Tula, ruled by Shukra.

A birth early in the star carries more of Kanya's discernment, an eye that sorts and refines. A birth a few degrees later starts to show Tula's ease with balance and with people.

Chaitra, the month that carries its name

Chitra gives its name to Chaitra, the first month of the traditional lunar calendar. The full Moon stands near this star at the month's opening, which is where the name comes from. Chaitra opens the traditional new year, and the festivals that follow it, among them Ugadi, sit on a calendar this star quietly set in motion.

Chitra as your janma nakshatra

When the Moon stood in Chitra at birth, this is the janma nakshatra, the birth star recorded on a kundali. The mind here wants things done well, not merely done. There is a natural eye for proportion, for the gap between adequate and finished.

The strengths show up as craft. Design, architecture and any visual or creative field reward this star's attention to form, to line, to whether a thing sits right. Classical writers describe the Chitra native as striking in appearance, someone remembered after a room has been left.

The lesson is recognising when a piece is finished. The same eye that spots what could be better can keep circling long after the work needed no more.

Because Kuja rules the star, life opens in a Kuja dasha, seven years in the Vimshottari sequence. How much of it remained at birth depends on how far the Moon had travelled through Chitra; the dashas that follow, Rahu, Guru and onward, run in their fixed order.

Care for this star is a matter of pace. Craft rewards patience, and a Chitra native pushed to rush a finish tends to feel it first in restlessness, not in the work itself.

Chitra rising

With the lagna in Chitra, the rising degree falls either in the last third of Kanya or the first third of Tula. The self the world meets carries attention to appearance, whether in dress, speech or the space kept around them. The manner tends to be graceful and, at times, exacting about small things others let pass.

Kuja rules the rising star here. The rashi lord is Budha or Shukra depending on the exact degree, so both are worth locating in the chart. Where they sit shows whether the craft leans toward sharp, precise work or toward harmony and partnership.

The four padas

  • Pada 1, Simha navamsha. The first pada falls in the Simha navamsha, ruled by Surya: the boldest of the four, drawn to visible work and to being seen doing it well.
  • Pada 2, Kanya navamsha. The second pada falls in the Kanya navamsha, ruled by Budha: exacting and detail-minded, the quarter most likely to catch a flaw others miss.
  • Pada 3, Tula navamsha. The third pada falls in the Tula navamsha, ruled by Shukra: the most balanced of the four, with a strong pull toward beauty and fair proportion in dealings with others.
  • Pada 4, Vrischika navamsha. The fourth pada falls in the Vrischika navamsha, ruled by Kuja: intense and private about its craft, capable of a depth the other three padas rarely reach.

Names from Chitra

A child born in Chitra is traditionally given a name that begins with the syllable of the pada. The four are Pe, Po, Ra and Ri, in pada order. Families who keep the practice work out the pada from the birth chart, since the syllable changes every 3°20′.

Work and calling

Tvashtar, maker of the instruments of the gods, with Kuja (Mars) as lord, gives Chitra a talent for building things that work as well as they look. Architecture or engineering suits it, as do jewellery, sculpture or the making of fine tools and machines. The Tula padas, under Shukra (Venus) as sign lord, lean towards fashion, interior design or the arts. The Kanya padas, under Budha (Mercury), lean towards technical drawing, precise trades or quality inspection.

Marriage and partners

Chitra natives bring their care for beauty into a home: a well-kept house, attention to how things look, thoughtful gifts. Kuja as lord gives warmth with a quick temper at times, so patience in disagreement serves the marriage well. The Tula padas lean most naturally towards partnership, since Tula is the sign of balance. A partner who appreciates the effort behind things made well tends to win this native's lasting regard.

Because Chitra crosses from Kanya into Tula, the Moon sign changes within the star, with it the bhakoot and graha maitri scores, which depend on the two signs. A Kanya-pada Chitra and a Tula-pada Chitra can therefore score differently against the same partner. Any low score is examined in the whole chart. Health, in general terms

The first two padas lie in Kanya, which Varahamihira's Kalapurusha places at the waist. The last two lie in Tula, placed at the lower abdomen, the bladder region. These are the areas that ask for care, according to the pada. Kuja's drive suits regular exercise, balanced by unhurried meals.

Other names and spellings

Chitra is Chithirai in Tamil, spanning Kanni rasi for its first two padas and Thulam rasi for the last two. In Telugu it is Chitta. Malayalam calendars write Chithira. The Tamil month Chithirai takes its name from this star, as Chaitra does.

Questions

Questions people ask

What does the Chitra nakshatra symbol mean?

The symbol is a pearl. A pearl forms slowly inside a shell, layered rather than cut, which is why the star is read as patient craft: work refined in stages until it holds a shine.

Is Chitra a good nakshatra to start something in?

Muhurta texts place Chitra in the Mridu, or soft, group, generally favoured for gentle, careful starts rather than urgent ones. The panchangam for a given date shows whether the Moon is in Chitra that day, and specific muhurtham rules narrow it further for the task at hand.

Which nakshatras are compatible with Chitra?

In kundali matching, Chitra scores the full yoni points with Vishakha, the other tiger star. Pairing with a cow-yoni star, Uttara Phalguni or Uttara Bhadrapada, scores no yoni points. It scores the full gana points with other Rakshasa-gana stars, among them Ashlesha, Magha, Vishakha, Jyeshtha and Mula. A partner also born in Chitra shares its nadi, Madhya, which scores no points in that koota, the one the texts weigh most, though listed relief rules soften a handful of such pairings. A low score in one koota is weighed with the whole chart. How matching works.

What is the Chitra nakshatra lord?

Kuja is the lord of Chitra, so a person born with the Moon here begins life in a Kuja dasha. The rashi is Kanya or Tula depending on the exact degree, ruled by Budha or Shukra. All three grahas matter for this star.

What is Chitra nakshatra called in Tamil and Telugu?

In Tamil it is Chithirai, spanning Kanni and Thulam rasi; in Telugu it is Chitta. Malayalam calendars write Chithira.

Also in Kanya and Tula: Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Vishakha. All twenty-seven nakshatras.
